Here is a list of books I think you may like, not all chicken related though!

Low Cost Living by John Harrison.  Just got my copy of John's 3rd book yesterday.  I'm quite good at doing  'frugal', but this book has lots of good ideas and advice.

Vegetable Growing Month by Month by John Harrison.  John's first book is a down to earth, easy to carry around book that helps you plan your gardening year in the vegetable garden.  Lots of information and Easy to read.

The Essential Allotment Guide by John Harrison.  Another no nonsense guide from John about getting the best from your allotment.

Starting With Chickens by Katie Thear.  Katie Thear has been raising and breeding chicken and other poultry for years.  She has many really good books, but this one and the next one are the only ones I've read.

Incubation, a Guide to Hatching and Rearing by Katie Thear.  Another very good book by Katie Thear, well worth a read if you are thinking of hatching your own chicks.

Keeping Poultry and Rabbits on Scraps.  by Claude Goodchild and Alan Thompson. A re-print of a 1941 book when all kitchen waste was fed to people's animals to help increase the nation's food resources.  This book just turned up in the post one day, I still don't know who sent it to me, but it is very interesting, especially in these recession hit days of ours.

The Vegetable and Herb Expert by Dr D G Hessayon.  I have the older version which is just the Vegetable Expert, but I love this book too.  although my older version recommends pesticides and insecticides in it that we no longer use, I find it very good for telling me when to sow, when to expect to harvest, how much yield to expect from a certain sized row, oh lots of things.

Gardening Under Plastic by Bernard Salt.  Gives ideas on growing under fleece, films, cloches and polytunels.

Gardening magazines are all very well, but every year the same sort of thing gets written about, so the best thing about them I think is they sometimes give you free seeds!!  But then this year, with the help of my friends on www.chat.allotment.org.uk , I've got quite a few packets of free seeds from offers on the internet!!

so Happy Reading everyone!

I am thinking about getting about four/five chickens to keep in my back garden as we are going to start growing our own fruit and vegetables as it is no longer needed for cricket & football pitches….The whole garden is approximately 100 feet long by 30 feet wide and we back onto a railway line – so no problems with cockerels crowing. The thing that we do have to contend with is rats and foxes.

Is it advisible to get chickens in this situation or do we go for it and dig in loads of chicken wire (12" deep)?

I look forward to your reply.

I am trying to get hold of some meat bird chicks (I live in East Kirkby PE23) – do you know of any local suppliers – I have been trying Poulet Anglais as I thought they would be nearest but have not had a response. Any advice gratefully received.

Kind regards

Sarah
