Not been a good week….
Don't know if it was something I ate, but first 2 days this week spent more time in bathroom than anywhere else! Tummy is still a bit sore, but otherwise,I'm okay. Makes you tired though!
But today, we picked up our latest batch of babies, 70 day old Coloryields from Poulet! 4 of them went straight out to a nice young couple who had all the equipment to show their children how chicks grow up, but they had no chicks. Well they have now!! My youngest chicksale!!!! lol
And here they are! I like them best when they are tiny, they are soooo cute!!!!
It still amazes me that they find the food and water so quickly and start scratching about!
And the turkeys are growing nicely now. They will be 10 weeks old on Monday!
What a show off!!!!
A very nice man came from Wolverhampton the other day for 25 of the turkeys and hopefully another 20 are going to Guildford.
so that makes a bit more space in the shed for the rapidly growing turkey flock!!!!
All the Babcock POL's have gone now. Most of them are laying, but I have heard of a few that aren't, hope they hurry up!!! lol
The Amberlinks are 14 weeks old and doing well now they have stopped suffocating each other. Its strange what happened the other week, but I have taken down the CD's in their shed as Poulet suggested, just in case it was that which frightened them, and I can only surmise that something happened that night to frighten them to panic and rush down one end piling up on top of each other. But we didn't hear anything that night. Oh well.
20 went to their new homes yesterday, and hopefully 20+ are going to Doncaster next week, so I don't think I'm going to be left with too many to sell after they reach POL. And THIS time I am determined to keep some to join my own layers!!!! lol
Just been out to check on the babies. Hubby came in just now and said just how close did you put the plastic drinkers to the heat lamp? there's a funny smell in the garden!!! But with the smoke hanging around, it looks like someone has had a fire, both plastic drinkers and chicks are fine. The chicks are nearly all asleep now, in a nice circle under the heat lamp, with a space in the middle! just right! But I'll check once more before I go to bed, just to make sure!!!!

Hi Annie,
Just to let you know that the hens are laying well, 6 large eggs a day. Lovely! made some adjustments to the hen house and increased the nest boxes for them. But as yet they still prefer to use just the one. I think in total including hens I have spent a total of £60-£80 but have seen hen houses smaller than mine going for over £300. Really into it now, now that I realise that they rule the roost!!! And like most women always have the last say on the subject. Might increase the numbers by two or three in the spring.
All in all thoroughly enjoying having them, even though they have virtually taken over our life!
Thanks again,
will be in touch soon, keep up the good work
Mark
Hi Mark, thank you for your message! Nice to hear your girls are doing well for you!!!
Yes, lol, the eggs do get a bit big at times don't they??? And I think nearly all the girls are laying now, except for a couple in the village who haven't started yet, but I think they are being too well looked after!!!!
Quite a few of the Amberlinks have gone to new homes now, even though they are only 14 weeks old, and the new meat chicks are now 6 days old, so not even big enough for a sanwich yet!!!

Was that you I saw on freecycle today then? Hope you get your shed for your chooks! And have you found a home for your ilkies yet? I like looking at Silkies, but not sure if I'd want any. I'd like a few pure breeds one day, although Brian says no way, but we'll see eh???? lol
Hi Anne
I've had 2 lovely warren hens for about 3 months now and they have been laying lovely tasty eggs but last week their eggs had an unpleasant tinny taste and their not laying everyday.
I've just bought 2 ex battery hens & 2 black rock chicks they all seem to be settling down now would this have had an effect on them. cheers Kath
HI ANNIE ITS MICHELLE, YES I GOT SOMEONE FOR THE SILKIE COCKRALS WHAT A TOUCH, CHEERS FOR THE SITE BUT I STILL AINT GOT A SHED LOL X
Hi Kath, I must say I can't understand why your lovely eggs should start tasting tinny, have you changed the food they are eating recently? I know my eldest daughter's MIL told me she didn't like eggs as they always tasted fishy, but our eggs didn't. And I think that some feed has a lot of fishmeal in it, but I really can't think of anything else. But the upset of you getting new chooks could be why they have gone off lay a bit, also the cold darkers days don't help. How old are the warrens? If they are older birds, then they may stop or be a bit stop and start over winter, but if they are young birds, especially as they are hybrids, they would normally keep laying though their first winter. Strange, hope they get back to normal soon!!!!
If anyone just north of Boston is reading this, Michelle would like a shed for her chickens!!!!!! Please get in touch with me, and I'll let her know!!! lol
Hope you get one soon Michelle!
