What a week,
On Monday, we took the dog to the vet as she had a swelling on her ear. I thought she'd had a grass seed get in there and it had formed an abcess. But the vet said it was cauliflower ear! or hematoma auris, probably caused when she rushes through the conifers ears flying eaverywhere!!! He gave her a steroid injjection and said that I've to take her back Thursday and if it hasn't gone down, they'll have to drain it under anaesthetic! Goodness knows what that'll cost! the injection was £33!!!
After that, we went down to Kelly's Turkeys in Essex to collect the 150 day old turkey poults we ordered. 80 are for a friend, but he hasn't been to collect them yet! We don't have a shed big enough for the other 70, but hubby is going to empty out his workshop for them for the time being! (Goodness knows where he's going to put everything!!!) lol
We lost one this morning. I found it laying near the feeder. Tried reviving it but it died later today, must have been a weak one, as the others are fine see??????

We were surprised at how laid back they are! Not at all skittish like the chicks are. When you open the door, they come up to see you, and if you put your hand on the floor they will come up and peck at you or stand on your hand! And what still amazes us, is that they started dustbathing and pecking at the hanging CD's straight away!!
Inquisitive little fellow isn't he (or she)???
They are as hatched, so we won't know for a while yet what we've got in a ratio of girls to boys.
They've got long legs and long necks, and now at 2 days old you can just see the bump on top of their beaks where the woggle will grow.!

We got home from Essex at 5.3pm ish to find out that hubby's Mum had fallen down the stairs and was in hospital, but it was only the last couple of stairs, and she is fine, just bruies and shock, but they are keeping her in hospital for a while as she is blind. Brian's youngest brother is having to do all the running around, as it is so far for us to do much way up here, and they are down in Essex.
Then on Tuesday when the alarm went off at 6am, I heard Sooty Cat scratching around and thought she'd come in to tell me she was ready for her breakfast, but she wasn't. when I went into the spare bedroom, I could hear her crying from under one of the beds, so I got her out and her back legs were paralyzed. We can't afford to call out emergency vets, so I made her comfortable in a big box with a pillow in it and waited for the vets to open. She is 13 now, but not a great age for a cat. anyway, the vet said that it sounds like she has a heart problems anyway, and there was a lot of fluid on her lungs and that probably a blood clot had traveled down the main aorta to where it divides for the blood to run down the legs and got stuck. She said we could try injections and tablets, but that Sooty would never have the same quality of life that she's had before, and I know she was in a lot of pain as she bit me twice and I had to go and have a tetanus booster today as I haven't had one in 10 years!! So the vet put her down for us. She said it was kinder than all the injections and tablets and pain.
So my faithful old friend has gone to pussycat heaven, and we buried her in the fruit garden next to the big blackcurrant bush and I'm going to plant my gooseberry bush over the top so nothing can try to dig her up! She's been a good girl since we rescued her from the Blue Cross 12 years ago, and she had a good life, doing exactly what she wanted!
So now, we've got to get Penny sorted out at the vets tomorrow, and find out if we need a second mortgage to pay the fees!!!!
I'm just going to put a picture of Sooty on here as a little memorial to her!

And its been a very tiring week all round, so I'm going to have a reasonaly early night tonight I think!!

Hi Ann,
Really sorry to hear about sooty.
Wonderful web Blog BTW…. full of good hits and tips.
My 3 Babcocks are growing well, and more fun than I really imagined.
Many Thanks,
Peter.
Thanks Peter, its funny, this last year Sooty spent more time upstairs on her own as she never really got on with the dog, so we didn't sit and cuddle or anything, but she was always at the top of the stairs when we went up there, either sunbathing when the sun shone through the windows, or asking for her dinner, but its like there's a hole in our lives, even macho Brian feels there is something missing, but I won't replace her! And I'm pleased your Babcock's are growing well! And yes, they are great characters are't they? Have you started talking to them yet???? My brother can't understand why I talk to my chickens!!!!!
I was sorry to read about Sooty's death. No, she can't be replaced but she can have a successor when you feel ready.
I don't have any hens yet but am hoping to start keeping them in a month or two. In the meantime I'm doing plenty of reading and research and having great fun doing so. I did a wonderful course with Alison at Hook Farm in Hampshire recently. Spouse is being converted to the idea.. slowly!
Maeve
Thanks Maeve, I don't think I really want to replace Sooty, she was a cat in a million! But maybe one day another one will pull at the strings!!! lol
I hope you get on well with your chook learning. Have you looked at the allotment site that I mention on my 'Sites I Like' page? There is a great wealth of info on here bout chickens and a brilliant forum too. You will learn more than you can from books.
I've heard about the courses at Hook Farm, so you enjoyed the course then?
