Only 64 Babcock's left now!

2

I had a count up the other day, and 53 of the Babcocks have already gone to their new homes, all the rest are booked out, and tonight I had a call from a friend I haven't seen for a while, desperate to get her friend 4 chickens.  She mentioned the place we got our original layers from last year, but another friend of ours bought 40 from her a few weeks ago and they are nearly all dead from some internal parasite so the vet says.  So I can't recommend her to anyone again!  Ayway, I ddin't really have any available, but I phoned around some of the people on my reserve list and one lady's husband said his wife has enough hens and she doesn'twant anymore!  So I sold them to my friend of a friend instead!!

They are 14 weeks old now, and look like hens rather than chicks!

Mmmm, thought I'd taken a closer one than this!

They are good girls though and at the moment don't fly as high as the Amberlinks used to!

And the little Amberlinks are now 4 weeks old and some of them weigh nearly 300 gms!  I have 9 in my box now recovering from the pecking, but some of them now are properly healed up so can go back in teh brooder shed.  I started cleaning out the big shed for them today, but it rained nearly all day, so much for 'occasional showers'!!!!

But I'll finish it in the morning, then get it disinfected and poultryshielded, then Saturday they can go into the 'big girls' house!  That gives me time Saturday afternoon and Sunday to get the brooder really well cleaned out for the turkey chicks coming on Monday!  Hubby always says you should be really careful with turkeys and chickens as chickens carry something called blackhead that kills turkeys, so I don't want any cross contamination taking place in the broder and risk losing some of the turkeys!

I still ache at the moment, as the feed arrived early yesterday, 5 minutes after hubby popped out, so I had to unload 2 tonne of feed off the lorry on my own as the driver was 'agency' so he kept telling me, and just placed the bags of feed on the side of the lorry and waited until I'd unloaded them before putting some more on there!  so now my arms ache from lifting 25kgs bags of feed down, and my hernia hurts from the weight!  Sad person aren't I??? lol

Oh, sold another 6 meat chickens on Sunday, so the freezer is beginning to get some space in it again.  Mind you all my jam stuff is in there at the moment too, waiting for me to be not so busy.  We picked 17lbs of strawberries from the field up the road the other week, and I've picked nearly 10lb of blackcurrants off my rogue bush, so there will be plenty of jam for us for the winter!!!!

Well, I'm off to bed in a short while, so nite for now!

Ah yes the joys of bagged feed Annie, I'm glad I have bulk, even though we have to bag off and weigh the feed for the brooder houses. I remember back in the mists of time when I used to grow ducklings for Cherry Valley and our nursery site was entirely bagged feed they used to turn up with 4 weeks bags at once on two lorries to keep us going over Christmas because the Feed Mill shut down over the Bank Holiday. That was 28 tonnes we had to handball off and carry into shed and stack on pallets, mind you there was 6 of us but it was still hard going!
