Probably my last post in March!
Well, the chicks are 2 weeks old today, and they had their weigh in this morning! And up-to-date photos! I'll pop the photos on later, but just wanted to add this post as I'm off to bonny Scotland tomorrow for a week of housesitting for some friends!
I'm really excited, as I've never been to Scotland before, and I'm taking 6 of the chicks with me for them to grow on!!!!
But, back to the weigh in! (sounds a bit like weightwatchers doesn't it???
Most of the chicks I weighed were between 180 and 210 gms, but one of the quickest growers (the JA757's) was 250gms, and one of the slowest (Mastergris) was 300 gms!!!!! So they are enjoying themselves!
I lost one 2 days ago, she got crushed when something scared them and they all rushed down the end of the shed! We try not to do anything to make them jumpy, but we get big lorries running pst the garden and aircraft overhead, so you can only do so much! But everyone else is nice and healthy!
For the 6 going to Scotland, I've got a nice strong box, which I've put some ventilation slits in, but not too big as I don't want them getting too cold. I was going to put a hot water bottle in too, but I need to put food and water in for them and am worried the bottle will make the bottom a bit wobbly. Trains are warm inside though, and the box will also be in a big shopping bag! It's got polystyrene in the bottom underneath layers of newspaper too!
Advice from my friends was to put a sponge in the small margarine tub I'm using for water, which will help prevent the water from going all over the place, mind you, knowing my luck, I'll still do it wrong! And a smaller tub for the food. With a spare bottle of water and tub of food for the journey!
Hopefully nothing will go wrong for hubby whilst I'm away! It'll be the first time he's looked after small chicks for many years!!!! He made them a nice set of perches this morning, so they can start to practice. They liked to perch on the feed troughs, but I've replaced them now with a big feed hopper. They were emptying the troughs 3 or 4 times a day!!!!
once I can get on my other computer, I'll upload my today photo's and put a pic on there of the new mini perches!
