So much for my promise to post more regularly!
Almost a month since my last post! I must be getting old if time is passing me by so quickly!
I've had a rotten day today! A good customer of mine had asked me to save him 100 of my latest flock of hybrids. I said I would save as many as possible, but it wouldn't be 100. Okay he said save me whatever you have left. I'll call you next week. Well 6 weeks later, I called him this afternoon to see when he wants them, but due to work commitments and fox trouble, he doesn't want them now!
I know I only have 70 left, but I've turned people away because of him! Luckily, I've been phoning around and some of the people who ordered from the next flock which I haven't even got yet are coming to collect early! lol But there are still quite a few left! I think we will keep about 25 to re-new our laying flock as my girls are getting older now and I'm only getting about 6-9 eggs, more usually 6 a day from the 12 girls.
Then another regular customer who doubled his last year's order for turkey poults, now also isn't sure if he can take all 50!
Why can't people pick up the phone? It doesn't take a minute!
Then late this afternoon a funny thing happened. My friend Joy came round and I have 4 meat chickens living free on the garden. A cockerel and 3 pullets. They were badly pecked some weeks ago and hubby said oh don't put them back in with the others, they'll get killed, so they've been living free and sleeping in the bottom of the big ark. My friend Jacqui came up from Kent the other week and named them as Kellogs and the Cornflake girls! Well the other day, Kellogs started limping, goodness knows what he had done, but he was still getting around fine. I examined him, but couldn't find anything wrong with his leg.
Anyway, today he scared the meat chickens which are still in the run and one flew over the fence and landed in front of him. Well.. he thought his luck had changed, so off he limps after her at quite a speed. Joy and myself went down the garden to get the pullet back, but we couldn't find either of them anywhere! We looked through the conifers, went round the garden twice then out and down the road looking in the hedgerow. Nothing, no sight or sounds of them!
Then tonight while waiting for the dinner to cook, I went outside and there is Kellogs merrily limping back up the garden, and tonight he went to sleep in the ark with his normal 3 girls, but I can't find the other one from the run. Hubby thinks I'm mad, but this morning there were 15 girls in the run and now there are 14! So one is definitely missing! So were any of you driving down the A52 west of Boston tonight and did you see my missing white chicken? lol
I've now sold quite a few of my first pure breed chicks, but still have some available if you are interested? Exchequer leghorns, Araucanas and 4 silkies!
I've also got several young cockerels free to good home. they are 9 to 12 weeks old.
A few weeks back I got a lovely shed from the sister of an acquaintance who lives in our village. It is only a 7 by 6 footer, but is lovely. Hubby had to cut it in 2 all round to get it in our little van, but it looks good as new now! And this time the chickens DON'T get it! lol It's mine! wel I ave to store my new and spare drinkers and feeders in it as well as my garden tools and potting shed stuff, so its a little crowded, but its still all MINE!!!
