Two Weeks and…..

2

8-O   I can't believe it is almost Christmas again!  the year has flown by so quickly!  And I've just realised that I haven't posted since 21st November!

Well it's that time of year again when Hubby starts to cull the turkeys and chickens ready for all those Christmas dinners!  And I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you to my mentor John Harrison for looking after my blog and sorting out my problems on here!

John also very kindly put an advert on his allotment growing forums for my turkeys too, and most of our sales have either been from there or from the blog here.  So thank you everyone who has ordered so far, still a few turkeys left at what I think is a very good price, if you compare them to other websites.  And a special thank you to all those customers from last year who have come back and ordered again.  That is the biggest accolade anyone can have…. repeat orders!

I was looking for goose prices the other day for someone on the allotment forum, and I found a website who were selling chickens too.  Their chickens were approx £28 EACH plus £20 delivery……. Yes, £20!!  That's £48 for a chicken!!!!

What, are they gold plated?????  lol  Our packing and delivery charge actually comes to £11.56, but I thought that £10 sounds better, so okay, we don't make as much profit, but if it means we sell more turkeys…. well….. what can I say!  Result!

Just a quick update on the rest of the poultry family!  2 of my 4 Light Sussex girls are now laying almost every day. One of the RIR girls has laid me 2 eggs in the past week.  they are all 33 weeks now.

The 2 youngest Goldlines have just started to lay and one of the Araucanas now lays most days as does one of the Exchequer Leghorns.  And the 2 older silkies are laying most days too, so I have a lovely assortment of eggs now!

One of my customers came the other week for his Thanksgiving turkey and some eggs, and I had wrapped up 2 of the blue araucana eggs in small gold gift boxes and gave them to him for the children.

They were so pleased with them, but thought they were fake at first.  His daughter took hers into school with her to show the class, then she had it for her breakfast!!!

Anyway, fairly short tonight as back to plucking again in the morning, so I should have an early night!

I'll try to post again before Christmas!!!!  Take Care everyone!

Hi Annie.

Long time since I contacted you. Jake still wants to come and meet you and poppy sometime soon. And to see how you do things. We've had a good first summer with our girls and so far, despite the weather not a bad winter but I still want to learn more. The original idea of 15 or so girls has turned into nearer 50. We started with 15 Lohman browns then we went to see Gaz Clarkes setup and came home with Jakes 3 sussex girls. Then we got 2 broody silkies and put a dozen of Gaz's bluebell eggs under 1 and some white star eggs under the other resulting in another 6 girls. Next I took Jake to Brigg auction and ended up coming home with Jakes black leghorn quartet. Then a neighbour on the allotments was going to neck the 8 ex bats he had to get some POL's so Jake re-rescued them. Then to finish off we hatched some more eggs that we bought for £1.50 for 15 and have 8 as yet unsexed chicks. I think the lady said they were a mixture of sussex and welsummer and I think possibly brahma. Anyway should be good layers or meat birds.

Somebody told me chucks were addictive. I dont know where the silly bugger got that idea from.

Anyway Annie I hope you and the family all have a very merry Christmas and happy new year.

Phil and Jake.

Nothing like raising chickens in a free environment. Reading your blog makes me want to move to the countryside and raise animals. Watching them grow is such a blessing. More power to you and your blog!
