i can't believe……
And once again, it's ages since I updated my blog! 13th September? Wow, it doesn't seem that long ago since I put pen to paper so to speak!!!
I've had such a lot going on in my tiny brain though. But, life goes on, and time passes very quickly too at times.
3 weeks ago, I left all the chickens and turkeys in Brian's hands and trotted off to Kent to see my youngest daughter, her family and some of my friends and my cousin. I had a lovely time, over drank, over ate, went out to lunch every day and as I won't see my Nici and her family over Christmas, we had an early Christmas on the Sunday, where we had a lovely roast turkey breast (yep, you guessed it, one of mine!!!) and opened our presents.
Brian doesn't like Christmas, so at least I had a family Christmas, even if it was nearly 2 months early! I do enjoy dressing up my lounge and hallway though, but I'll have to do that a bit earlier this year as we will soon start thinking about culling, plucking and ultimately sending out all the turkeys and chickens.
Orders are starting to come in, and I've got all my boxes ready, and the Sorba-freeze we use to keep the meat lovely and cold until after delivery!
Most of the people who had a chicken or turkey last year have come back for another order, so that's nice! Makes you feel good when people return for more! Also a couple of people have had our turkey who don't normally like turkey and they enjoyed it, so I think they must be used to the rubbish they sell in the supermarkets.
We are also lucky in that we know a very nice young man who is raising his own Dexter beef, and we got a hindquarter from him the other week. Wow, it is lovely meat! Brian cut it up for us as he used to work in a butcher's years ago, and still remembers how to do it. I also got some leftover bits so I was able to make 7.5lbs of mince too. As well as the steaks, rump, topside, etc.
That should last us a while. Good job too as we are getting short of frozen poultry at the moment. After finding out that the electricity bill was twice what it normally is after we had to buy that really big freezer for those left over turkeys last year, we swapped it and some money for the beef!
I had a call from simon just over a month ago to ask if we wanted anymore meat chicks as he had some day olds left over. So as we had sold loads of the ones we had as growers, we bought all Simon had spare. I was worried that we may not have enough chickens for our orders for Christmas, and these ones which are nearly 6 weeks old should weigh about 2.5kgs by then, so not bad. I hope the older ones reach a good weight though, as most of them are ordered by now!
I've also been busy trying to have a sort out indoors. I'm trying to downsize, as I keep telling Brian that we need to move to a smaller place so we can be mortgage free, but he still wants a farm with 20+ acres. I really don't feel able to keep that sort of place going at my age. After all, I'll be 60 next year and Brian will be 64. Not a good age to 'start' farming.
Anyway, must get on. I'll try not to leave it so long next time. Take care all, will post again soon!
